Funny Feet

I know I should but out there, but I hate running outside in Winter.  It's all the layers you have to put on, followed by the fact that it's still cold once you get out there and probably dark (because it's Sweden).  This means during winter my running is relegated to the treadmill where I have a maximum boredom threshold of 30 mins until I have to get off and do something else.

I've been going more and more minimal with my running shoes for a long time, weening myself off my tank-like Asics Nimbus' into Nike Free Runs for all but the most uneven trails.  But until I'd never gone all the way and tried Vibram Five Fingers even tho I'd bought a pair ages ago.

So yesterday I thought I'd finally give them a go and try a light run on the treadmill at the gym to see how they felt.  Knowing me, I knew the results of this test wouldn't be felt immediately afterwards but the next morning day when I got out of bed, but this morning I'm feeling fine, so maybe I'll start swapping them out for my Nike Free Haven 3.0's on a regular basis.

Night Shooting

With so little daylight during the Swedish winter, you don't have much choice but to brush up on your night shooting skills.

It was a cold night, just below freezing.  Armed with my Canon A-1, a 50mm f1.4 lens and some Kodak Portra 400 I shot until my fingers we're frozen, but luckily old analogue cameras have lots of big levers and buttons that are easy to work with numb fingers.

Biopalatset glow

I wanted to see what would happen if I multi-exposed a shot that was out of focus, then overlaid it with one that was in focus. Stupidly, when I first had this idea I'd forgotten my tripod because you really need to overlay them perfectly to get the best effect.

I think the effect turned out kinda cool.

Sometimes being caught in the rain isn't so bad

Sunshine and showers

I've been catching up with scanning my film negatives from last summer and caught this rare moment when it was both sunny and raining at the same time.

While spending years walking too and from school in every possible weather Rossendale could throw at me gave me a general dislike of rain, these kind of moments make it not so bad to be caught out in a shower.

Dirty records

Maybe it reminds me of growing up when I used to spend all my lunch money on an Album at the start of the week, before living on donuts and iced-fingers for the rest of the school week.

It seems weirder because I don't even have a record player, sold all my CD's a few years back and find all my music these day's on Spotify.

VSCO

I love shooting film and my best shots over the past year or so have all been analogue rather than digital.  But it can be a pain with canisters of only 36 frames and the scanning that has to be done afterwards.

This week I've been playing around with VSCO Film by Visual Supply company for Apple Aperture with some pictures I recently took with my Leica D-Lux 5.  With only a few clicks I was able to quickly bring some warmth and life to the colours...and with all the changes visible in Aperture's workflow it was easy to adjust them to my own person preference while learning a few new tricks about post processing.

While I don't think VSCO film is going to make me trade in my analogue camera gear for a Full frame D-SLR just yet, and it only recreates the look of films like colour negative films like Portra, Fuji and Ilford and not my beloved Cross-Processed Kodak E100G which was discontinued last year (and currently stockpiling).

But it does make me more eager to use my Digital cameras more often as I can finally get a look I am happier with, without spending hours and hours in front of the computer.

Rediscovering Flickr

Is it just me, or since flickr updated their app around the time Instagram annoyed everybody by changing their TOC's there seems to be a whole lot more life going on there than there has been for months.

It's been sad to see how Flickr had been left in limbo by Yahoo for years, and as a result has been steadily bleeding to better looking free places for posting and sharing photos (Google+?).  But it's good to see people coming back because they've always been great for setting the rules for how people can use your photos.

I only wish they would hurry up and update their website because I'm pretty sure it hasn't changed since about 2008, while sites like Facebook updates theirs every few months.
